Hadith 539
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the night prayer (Tahajjud). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The night prayer is offered in pairs of two rak‘ahs. Then when one of you fears that dawn is approaching, he should pray one rak‘ah, which will make whatever he has prayed odd (witr) for him."

Hadith 540
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray eleven rak’ahs, that is, this was his (peace and blessings be upon him) tahajjud prayer. In it, his prostration was so (long) that any one of you could recite fifty verses before he (peace and blessings be upon him) would raise his head. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two rak’ahs before the Fajr prayer, then he would lie on his right side until the muezzin would come to him (peace and blessings be upon him) to inform him of the prayer.
