´It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that:` The Prophet said: "There will be some people among my Ummah (nation) who will gain knowledge of the religion, and they will recite Qur'an, and will say: 'We come to the rulers so that we may have some share of their worldly wealth, and we will make sure that our religious commitment is not affected,' but that will not be the case. Just as nothing can be harvested from the Qatad except thorns, so nothing can be gained from being close to them except (sins).'" (Da'if)(One of the narrators) Muhammed bin As-Sabbah said: "It is as if he meant, 'except sins'."

Ibn ‘Abbas reported God’s messenger as saying, “Some among my people will become learned in religion, will recite the Qur’an, and say that they will go to princes and get some of their worldly goods, but withdraw from them with their religion. That cannot be; for, as what is gathered from tragacanth trees consists only of thorns, so what is gathered from drawing near to them consists only of . . . ” Muhammad b. as-Sabbah said that he obviously meant “sins." Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Hadith Authentication: Its chain of narration is weak. ◄ Its narrator, Walid bin Muslim ash-Shami rahimahullah, was trustworthy, truthful, and a mudallis, and this narration is «عن», therefore it is weak. ◄ Ubaydullah bin Mughira bin Abi Burdah is of unknown status (majhool al-haal). Hafiz Dhahabi said: «غير معروف»[الكاشف 2؍205 ت3641]
