´It was narrated from ‘Amr bin Shu’aib, from his father, that his grandfather said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade Ihtiba’ (sitting with one's thighs gathered up against the stomach while wrapping one's arm or garment around them) on Fridays, meaning, when the Imam is delivering the sermon.”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefit:
The manner of sitting mentioned in the hadith, called "ihtiba’", has been explained as sitting on the buttocks with the knees raised and then clasping the hands around them for support, or tying a cloth around the back and knees. The Arabs would often sit in this way.
It is not correct to sit like this during the sermon (khutbah) because it leads to drowsiness, and thus the purpose of the sermon is lost.
In addition, there is a risk of the private parts becoming exposed in this posture.
