➊ There is no mention in any authentic hadith regarding the number of worshippers required for the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah), therefore the scholars have different opinions on this matter. For example: some have said four, some seven, and according to others nine, twelve, and some have given the opinion of twenty, forty, fifty, and seventy. None of these opinions are based on an authentic marfu‘ hadith. Congregational prayer (jama‘ah) can be established with even two people. Thus, the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is that if there are two people on a journey, one should give the call to prayer (adhan), and the one who is older in age and has more knowledge of the Qur’an should lead the congregation. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adhan, Chapter: “Whoever said that in travel one person should give the adhan,” Hadith: 628; and Sahih Muslim, al-Masajid, Chapter: “Who has more right to lead the prayer,” Hadith: 673)
➋ According to Imam al-Shafi‘i rahimahullah, it is necessary for there to be forty people for the Friday prayer, and according to Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah, it is sufficient to have two additional people besides the imam. However, he stipulates the condition that Jumu‘ah be held in a large city, which is absolutely incorrect. The first Jumu‘ah in Islam was performed in the village of Juwathah. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jumu‘ah, Chapter: “Jumu‘ah in villages and cities,” Hadith: 892) which falls outside the definition of a large city.
