Hadith 7218

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: It was said to `Umar, "Will you appoint your successor?" `Umar said, "If I appoint a Caliph (as my successor) it is true that somebody who was better than I (i.e., Abu Bakr) did so, and if I leave the matter undecided, it is true that somebody who was better than I (i.e., Allah's Apostle) did so." On this, the people praised him. `Umar said, "People are of two kinds: Either one who is keen to take over the Caliphate or one who is afraid of assuming such a responsibility. I wish I could be free from its responsibility in that I would receive neither reward nor retribution I won't bear the burden of the caliphate in my death as I do in my life."

Hadith Commentary:

SubhanAllah, observe the caution of Hazrat Umar radi Allahu anhu: when he saw that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not appoint anyone as a successor, but left the matter to the opinion of the Muslims, and Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu did appoint a successor, he (Umar) chose a path that combined both approaches—meaning, he left part of the matter to consultation and part of it he specified.

He appointed six men who, at that time, were the most virtuous and eminent, and then left the selection of one among those six to the opinion of the Muslims.

In this way, he acted upon both Sunnahs.

Secondly, observe his piety: among the ten given glad tidings of Paradise (asharah mubasharah), Sa’id ibn Zayd was also alive, but he did not even mention his name, out of the thought that he was related to Hazrat Umar radi Allahu anhu.

Alas, who among the Muslims has ever been produced like Hazrat Umar radi Allahu anhu, so selfless and just an author?

Every single action of his is sufficient to recognize his virtue, and it is a matter of regret for those blind of intellect who consider such a unique individual—whose equal has never existed in Islam—as blameworthy.

Hadith Commentary:

Umar radi Allahu anhu adopted an extremely cautious approach regarding the matter of the caliphate.
When he observed that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had not appointed anyone as caliph but had left it to the discretion of the Muslims, and that Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu had made a nomination, he chose a path that followed both of these esteemed personalities.
He left it to consultation with some people and also made a partial nomination.
He formed a committee of six men who, at that time, were the most virtuous among all the Muslims, and then left the determination of one among these six to the discretion of the Muslims.

In any case, regarding the caliphate, he adopted the method of both the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu.
