Narrated `Abdullah bin Dinar: When the people took the oath of allegiance to `Abdul Malik, `Abdullah bin `Umar wrote to him: "To Allah's Slave, `Abdul Malik, Chief of the believers, I give the Pledge of allegiance that I will listen to and obey Allah's Slave, `Abdul Malik, Chief of the believers, according to Allah's Laws and the Traditions of His Apostle in whatever is within my ability; and my sons too, give the same pledge."

Hadith Commentary:
Before the rule of Abdul Malik, there was discord and turmoil.
Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu had also pledged allegiance (bay‘ah) to Yazid ibn Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu.
During the period of factional kingship (ṭawā’if al-mulūkī), he had withdrawn himself.
When there was consensus among all the people upon the rule of Abdul Malik, he too wrote a letter to Abdul Malik ibn Marwan regarding his "hearing and obedience" (sam‘ wa ṭā‘at).
