Narrated `Abdullah bin Dinar: I witnessed Ibn `Umar when the people gathered around `Abdul Malik. Ibn `Umar wrote: I gave the Pledge of allegiance that I will listen to and obey Allah's Slave, `Abdul Malik, Chief of the believers according to Allah's Laws and the Traditions of His Apostle as much as I can; and my sons too, give the same pledge.'

Hadith Commentary:
What happened was that when Yazid became caliph, Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhu did not pledge allegiance to him. As soon as Yazid died, Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhu claimed the caliphate. On the other hand, Muawiyah ibn Yazid ibn Muawiyah became caliph; some people pledged allegiance to Abdullah, while others pledged allegiance to Muawiyah ibn Yazid. However, this Muawiyah did not live long—he ruled for only forty days and then passed away, and Marwan became caliph. He lived for six months and then died, appointing his son Abd al-Malik as caliph. Abd al-Malik sent the tyrant Hajjaj ibn Yusuf to fight Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhu. When Hajjaj prevailed and Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr was martyred, then all the people unanimously agreed upon Abd al-Malik. At that time, Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, along with his sons, pledged allegiance to him.
The names of Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu’s sons were:
(1) Abdullah, (2) Abu Bakr, (3) Abu Ubaydah, (4) Bilal, and (5) Umar. All of these were from Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd. (6) Abdur Rahman—his mother was Alqamah bint Nafis. (7) Salim, (8) Ubaydullah, and (9) Hamzah—their mother was a slave woman. Similarly, (10) Zayd—his mother was also a slave woman.

Hadith Commentary:
After the martyrdom of Abdullah ibn Zubair radi Allahu anhu, all the people agreed upon the rule of Abdul Malik ibn Marwan and everyone pledged allegiance to him.
At that time, Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, along with his sons, pledged allegiance to him.
The details of his sons are as follows:
➊ Abdullah, Abu Bakr, Abu Ubaydah, Bilal, and Umar.
These sons were from Safiyyah bint Abu Ubayd.
➋ Salim, Ubaydullah, and Hamzah—these three were born from his slave woman.
➌ Zayd’s mother was also a slave woman. Abdur Rahman was born from Alqamah bint Nafis. In any case, Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, along with his sons, pledged allegiance to Abdul Malik ibn Marwan, whereas during the time of tribulation and discord, he had chosen to remain apart.
