Hadith 7178

Narrated Muhammad bin Zaid bin `Abdullah bin `Umar: Some people said to Ibn `Umar, "When we enter upon our ruler(s) we say in their praise what is contrary to what we say when we leave them." Ibn `Umar said, "We used to consider this as hypocrisy."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In one narration, it is clarified that some people came to Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu and began to speak ill of Yazid ibn Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu. He said:
"Do you say this in front of them as well?" They replied:
"No, rather, in front of them we praise them."
He said:
"We used to consider this as hypocrisy."
(Fath al-Bari: 13/212 and Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi: 5/165)
In another hadith it is mentioned:
A man sought permission to come to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so he said:
"This person is very bad."
But when he came in, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam met him with a cheerful face. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adhan, Hadith: 6032)
The answer to this is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam first expressed the reality so that no dealings would be made with him, and when he came, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam displayed good character.
There is no contradiction between these two hadiths.

2.
In any case, a person’s outward and inward state should be consistent.
The difference between outward and inward is called hypocrisy, but this is practical hypocrisy (nifaq ‘amali), which gradually brings a person closer to disbelief (kufr).
In the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, hypocrisy (nifaq) was disbelief, whereas among us, practical hypocrisy is found.
