Hadith 7164

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: I have heard 'Umar saying, "The Prophet used to give me some money (grant) and I would say (to him), 'Give it to a more needy one than me.' Once he gave me some money and I said, 'Give it to a more needy one than me.' The Prophet said (to me), 'Take it and keep it in your possession and then give it in charity. Take whatever comes to you of this money while you are not keen to have it and not asking for it; take it, but you should not seek to have what you are not given. ' "

Hadith Commentary:
SubhanAllah, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) mentioned something that even Umar (radi Allahu anhu) had not thought of—that is, if Umar (radi Allahu anhu) had not accepted this wealth and had simply returned it, there would not have been as much benefit as there was in accepting it and then giving it in charity in the way of Allah.
Because in this way, the reward of charity (sadaqah) is also attained.
The scholars have stated that sometimes, in refusing wealth, the self (nafs) can acquire a sense of pride.
If this is the case, then one should accept the wealth and then give it in charity; this is better than not accepting it at all.
Nowadays, for those engaged in religious services, it is also better that they take a salary sufficient for their needs; if they are wealthy, they should not take it, or if they do take it, they should give it in charity.

Hadith Commentary:

This hadith narrated from Umar radi Allahu anhu was previously mentioned in the context of an incident.
Now Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has presented it independently so that its chain of transmission is strengthened.
According to this hadith, if Umar radi Allahu anhu had not taken that wealth and had returned it, it would not have had the same benefit as taking it and then giving it in charity.

Sometimes, even in returning wealth, a kind of pride can arise in the soul. If a person feels such arrogance within himself, he should take it and then give it in charity.
In such circumstances, taking it is far better than not taking it. Nowadays, for those engaged in religious services, it is also better that they definitely take a salary according to their needs.
Even if they are well-off, they should still receive it and then give it in charity.
