Narrated Al-Bara: In the Pre-lslamic Period when the people assumed Ihram, they would enter their houses from the back. So Allah revealed:-- "And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from the back, but the righteous man is he who fears Allah, obeys His Orders and keeps away from what He has forbidden. So enter houses through their doors." (2.189)

Hadith Commentary:
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), after entering the state of ihram, if there was a need to return (to their homes), people would not enter through the doors; rather, they would come from behind, from the side of the wall. Upon this, this verse was revealed.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), it was the custom of the Arabs that when they donned the ihram for Hajj or Umrah, and if they needed to enter their homes or returned from the journey of Hajj or Umrah, instead of entering through the door, they would climb over the wall from the back to enter.
They considered entering the house in this manner to be an act of piety.
Allah Almighty, in this noble verse, has admonished them that such meaningless customs have nothing to do with righteousness; rather, true righteousness is to fear Allah Almighty and to refrain from violating His commands.
➋
From this passage, another legal (shar‘i) principle is also understood: that it is not permissible to consider something necessary or an act of worship which the Shari‘ah has not declared necessary or an act of worship; likewise, to consider something unlawful which is legally permissible is also a sin.
And Allah knows best.
