Narrated Khalid bin Al-Harith: 'Ubaidullah was asked about Al Mahassab. 'Ubaidullah narrated: Nafi` said, 'Allah's Apostles, `Umar and Ibn `Umar camped there." Nafi` added, "Ibn `Umar used to offer the Zuhr and `Asr prayers at it (i.e. Al-Mahassab)." I think he mentioned the Maghrib prayer also. I said, "I don't doubt about `Isha' (i.e. he used to offer it there also), and he used to sleep there for a while. He used to say, 'The Prophet used to do the same.' "

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
A valley in which water flows, when it dries up and becomes hard, is called "Batha" (بطحاء).
It should be kept in mind that descending in the valley of Dhi Tuwa (وادی ذی طویٰ) before entering Makkah, and camping in the valley of Batha (وادی بطحاء) before entering Madinah Tayyibah on the return journey, are not among the rites (arkan) of Hajj.
It is up to the pilgrim performing Hajj or Umrah whether he wishes to stay at these places or not.
If he stays at these places considering it a Sunnah, he will not be deprived of reward.
(2)
By this heading, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah intends to show that camping only in the valley of Muhassab (وادئ محصب) is not the only Sunnah; rather, it is Sunnah to camp at other places as well, wherever the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam camped.
