Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin Yazid: I performed Hajj with Ibn Mas`ud , and saw him doing Rami of the big Jamra (Jamrat-ul-Aqaba) with seven small pebbles, keeping the Ka`ba on his left side and Mina on his right. He then said, "This is the place where the one on whom Surat-al-Baqara was revealed (i.e. Allah's Apostle ) stood."

Hadith Commentary: Qastallani said that this refers to the stoning (rami) on the tenth day; on the eleventh and twelfth days, the stoning should be done from above. The Jamrah Aqabah, which nowadays the common people call the "big devil," is superior to the other jamarat in four aspects: ➊ Firstly, on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr), only its stoning is performed; ➋ secondly, its stoning is done at the time of forenoon (chāshat); ➌ thirdly, it is to be stoned from the lower side; ➍ fourthly, one should not stay near it for supplication and so on, whereas after stoning the other jamarat, it is recommended (mustahabb) to stay and supplicate.
The stoning of the jamarat is a commemoration of the time when Satan appeared at these places to mislead Prophet Isma'il (alayhis salam) and tried to prevent him from fulfilling the command of Allah.
At these three places, stone pillars have been erected as markers, and by throwing pebbles at them according to the prescribed conditions, it is as if the accursed Satan is being stoned. The pilgrim, in effect, pledges that he will remain at the forefront in opposing the accursed Satan and in obeying the command of Allah, and by not forgetting this commemoration throughout his life, he will strive to prove himself a true follower of the religion of Ibrahim.
Jamrah Aqabah is also called Jamrah Kubra, and it is located at the last boundary of Mina in the direction of Makkah.
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) took the pledge of allegiance (bay'ah) from the Ansar at this very place for the migration (hijrah).
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu), after completing the stoning of Jamrah Aqabah, used to recite this supplication:
Allahumma aj‘alhu hajjan mabruran wa dhanban maghfuran. (O Allah, make it a Hajj that is accepted and a sin that is forgiven.)

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Jamrah al-‘Aqabah is also called Jamrah al-Kubra (the major Jamrah).
There are three Jamrahs in Mina which are pelted (with pebbles).
At all three locations, minarets have been constructed as markers.
By throwing pebbles at them according to the prescribed conditions, it is as if the accursed Shaytan is being stoned, and a pledge is made that in our future lives we will remain at the forefront in opposing the accursed Shaytan and in obeying the commands of Allah.
(2)
Jamrah al-‘Aqabah is located at the last boundary of Mina towards Makkah.
When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) pelted it, he kept Makkah to his left and Mina to his right.
This is the Sunnah method of pelting, however, it is permissible to pelt with Makkah behind oneself and Mina in front.
Similarly, it is also permissible to pelt while facing the Ka‘bah (Baytullah) and having Mina behind oneself.
Besides this, it should also be kept in mind that pelting (rami) is necessary; merely placing the pebbles there will not suffice.
And Allah knows best.
