Hadith 1663

Narrated Salim bin `Abdullah bin `Umar: `Abdul-Malik bin Marwan wrote to Al-Hajjaj that he should follow `Abdullah bin `Umar in all the ceremonies of Hajj. So when it was the Day of `Arafat (9th of Dhul-Hijja), and after the sun has deviated or has declined from the middle of the sky, I and Ibn `Umar came and he shouted near the cotton (cloth) tent of Al-Hajjaj, "Where is he?" Al-Hajjaj came out. Ibn `Umar said, "Let us proceed (to `Arafat)." Al-Hajjaj asked, "Just now?" Ibn `Umar replied, "Yes." Al-Hajjaj said, "Wait for me till I pour water on me (i.e. take a bath)." So, Ibn `Umar dismounted (and waited) till Al-Hajjaj came out. He was walking between me and my father. I informed Al-Hajjaj, "If you want to follow the Sunna today, then you should shorten the sermon and then hurry up for the stay (at `Arafat)." Ibn `Umar said, "He (Salim) has spoken the truth."

Hadith Commentary:
Delivering a brief sermon is an indication of the preacher’s understanding, whether it is for the two Eids or for Jumu‘ah (Friday prayer). As for the sermon of Hajj, it should be even briefer, for this is the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
The respected scholars who deliver lengthy sermons for Jumu‘ah and the two Eids should take heed of the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), for this will be a sign of their understanding.
And with Allah is success.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
A sermon being concise and comprehensive is a sign of the preacher’s intelligence, whether it is for the two Eids or for Friday. The sermon for Hajj should be extremely comprehensive and concise. During the sermon, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) declared the sanctity and inviolability of a Muslim’s blood and wealth to be equal to the sanctity of the city of Makkah, the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, and the Day of Arafah. He abolished certain corrupt practices and false beliefs of the pre-Islamic era (jahiliyyah) and instructed to hold firmly to the Book (Qur’an) and the Sunnah. (Hujjat al-Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam lil-Albani: 72)

(2)
It should be clear that the sermon is before the prayer, but there is a narration from Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) combined the Zuhr and Asr prayers, then delivered a sermon to the people. (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Manasik, Hadith: 1913) However, in Sahih Muslim, it is narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) that after reaching Arafat, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) delivered a sermon to the people, then someone gave the adhan and the iqamah was called, so he performed the Zuhr prayer, then the iqamah was called and he performed the Asr prayer. Nothing was performed between the two. (Sahih Muslim, al-Hajj, Hadith: 2950(1218)) Therefore, giving preference to the narration of Sahih Muslim over the hadith of Abu Dawud, the sermon should be delivered before the prayer.
