Hadith 1648

Narrated `Asim: I asked Anas bin Malik: "Did you use to dislike to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa?" He said, "Yes, as it was of the ceremonies of the days of the Pre-Islamic period of ignorance, till Allah revealed: 'Verily! (The two mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. It is therefore no sin for him who performs the pilgrimage to the Ka`ba, or performs `Umra, to perform Tawaf between them.' " (2.158)

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
This hadith establishes the legitimacy of performing sa’i (ritual walking) between Safa and Marwah.
It has already been mentioned that there were two idols placed on Safa and Marwah.
When the polytheists performed sa’i between Safa and Marwah, they would touch these idols and worship at those places. Because of this, the Ansar disliked performing sa’i between Safa and Marwah due to the customs of the Age of Ignorance and the practices of the polytheists. Allah Almighty, through this noble verse, removed their aversion.
(2)
A hadith with this same subject is also narrated from Aisha (radi Allahu anha), and we have already explained it previously.
