Narrated Anas bin Malik that Abu Dhar said: Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "The roof of my house was made open while I was at Makkah (on the night of Mi'raj) and Jibril descended. He opened up my chest and washed it with the water of Zamzam. The he brought the golden tray full of Wisdom and Belief and poured it in my chest and then closed it. The he took hold of my hand and ascended to the nearest heaven. Jibril told the gatekeeper of the nearest heaven to open the gate. The gatekeeper asked, "Who is it?" Jibril replied, "I am Jibril." Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Zamzam is that evergreen spring which gushed forth in Masjid al-Haram at some distance from the House of Allah (Baytullah) when Jibril (alayhis salam) struck the ground with his wing. The history of this magnificent and ancient well begins from the infancy of Isma'il (alayhis salam). This blessed spring burst forth in this barren, desolate, and rocky valley like a fountain due to his striking his heels on the ground in the agony of thirst. When his noble mother, Hajar (radi Allahu anha), saw this blessing under the feet of her beloved child, she was overjoyed.
(2)
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has established the virtue of Zamzam water from this hadith, that on the occasion of Mi'raj, the blessed chest of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was washed with this water. In addition, numerous ahadith are narrated regarding the virtues of Zamzam water, but according to the condition of Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), it was the aforementioned hadith which he narrated. According to a narration in Sahih Muslim, Zamzam water is not only considered the best and most blessed drink, but also as nourishment, and it has been prescribed as a remedy for the sick. (Sahih Muslim, Fada'il al-Sahabah, Hadith: 6359 (2473), and Sahih al-Jami' by al-Albani: 1/230) It is also narrated from Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk; Allah fulfills it." (Sunan Ibn Majah, Manasik, Hadith: 3062)
(3)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) states that it is called Zamzam because it is abundant in quantity, and also due to its gathering together it is called Zamzam. (Fath al-Bari: 3/623)
(4)
It should be noted that the spring of Zamzam is at a distance of forty cubits from the House of Allah (Baytullah). (Umdat al-Qari: 6/217)
