Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Allah's Apostle came to the drinking place and asked for water. Al-Abbas said, "O Fadl! Go to your mother and bring water from her for Allah's Apostle ." Allah's Apostle said, "Give me water to drink." Al-Abbas said, "O Allah's Apostle! The people put their hands in it." Allah's Apostle again said, 'Give me water to drink. So, he drank from that water and then went to the Zamzam (well) and there the people were offering water to the others and working at it (drawing water from the well). The Prophet then said to them, "Carry on! You are doing a good deed." Then he said, "Were I not afraid that other people would compete with you (in drawing water from Zamzam), I would certainly take the rope and put it over this (i.e. his shoulder) (to draw water)." On saying that the Prophet pointed to his shoulder.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary: The meaning is that if I descend and draw water myself, then hundreds of people, upon seeing me, will rush to draw water, and this will cause you inconvenience.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Quraysh had distributed the services related to the House of Allah:
arrangements for providing water, arrangements for feeding, management of cleanliness and lighting, likewise the custodianship of the key and supervision, etc.
These services were entrusted to different people.
Among them, the responsibility of providing water to the pilgrims was assigned to Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib (radi Allahu anhu).
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) maintained this system from the era of ignorance and left the management of the Well of Zamzam with Abbas (radi Allahu anhu).
He would soak raisins in Zamzam water and prepare nabidh (a drink made from soaked raisins) and serve it to the pilgrims.
Pure Zamzam water was also served.
(2)
During the days of Hajj, the nights of the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah are to be spent in Mina, so Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) requested the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to exempt him and his descendants from the obligation of spending the nights in Mina because they had to make arrangements for providing water to the pilgrims.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) granted them permission to spend these nights in Makkah.
From this, it is understood that due to a valid excuse, it is permissible to spend these nights outside Mina.
In the second hadith presented by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), there is further detail about this system of providing water.
In the narration of Tabari, it is mentioned that when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came to the Well of Zamzam after performing tawaf of the House of Allah to drink Zamzam water and requested water from Abbas (radi Allahu anhu), he said that this water is turbid.
We will bring you water from our house to drink.
He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
Serve me from this very water.
When that water was given to him, it had a strong effect of raisins and had become somewhat sour.
He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) mixed pure water in it to reduce its sourness and then drank it.
(‘Umdat al-Qari: 7/215) (3)
Bakr ibn Abdullah al-Muzani says that I was sitting with Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) near the Ka‘bah when a Bedouin came and said to him: Your cousins have set up stalls of milk and honey, but you are only serving nabidh; is this due to poverty or is it because of miserliness?
Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) replied:
We have neither hunger nor miserliness; the real matter is that we served nabidh to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and he praised us for it and instructed us to continue it, so we are continuing this practice according to his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) command.
