وَصَلَّى عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ خَارِجًا مِنَ الْحَرَمِ .
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also performed them outside the Haram.
Narrated Um Salama: (the wife of the Prophet) I informed Allah's Apostle (about my illness). (Through other sub-narrators, Um Salama narrated that when Allah's Apostle was at Mecca and had just decided to leave (Mecca) while she had not yet done Tawaf of the Ka`ba (and after listening to her). The Prophet said, "When the morning prayer is established, perform the Tawaf on your camel while the people are in prayer." So she did the same and did not offer the two rak`at of Tawaf until she came out of the Mosque.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated both chains of transmission of the hadith reported from Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha in the same context, but the wording of these two narrations is different. The wording of the first narration has already been mentioned in Hadith: 1618.
(2)
From this narration, it is understood that the two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer after circumambulation (tawaf) are also permissible outside the mosque, because if performing them inside Masjid al-Haram was obligatory and a condition, then the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not have approved the action of Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha.
(3)
This narration also shows that if someone misses the prayer of tawaf, he can make it up (qada) wherever he wishes, whether inside or outside the Haram. This is the position of the majority of the scholars. Imam Malik rahimahullah says that if someone leaves the boundaries of the Haram and reaches his homeland without having performed the prayer of tawaf, then a compensatory sacrifice (dam) will be obligatory upon him. However, the preferred opinion is that its status is not greater than that of the obligatory prayer (fard salah). When an obligatory prayer is missed, it can be performed wherever it is remembered; thus, the same rule will apply for the prayer of tawaf—that it should be performed wherever it is remembered. (Fath al-Bari: 3/615) However, performing it behind Maqam Ibrahim is more virtuous, as will be explained in the following section.
