Hadith 1610

Narrated Zaid bin Aslam that his father said: "I saw `Umar bin Al-Khattab kissing the Black Stone and he then said, (to it) 'Had I not seen Allah's Apostle kissing you, (stone) I would not have kissed you.' "

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) is a stone from Paradise.
The wisdom in kissing it is that by seeing something from Paradise, the intention is to express joy.
Previously, this narration has been mentioned in detail, that Umar radi Allahu anhu addressed the Black Stone and said: "You are a stone; you have no power to benefit or harm anyone on your own."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Hajj, Hadith: 1597)
(2)
The use of prescribed (shar‘i) acts brings benefit; however, the intent of Umar radi Allahu anhu was that the Black Stone has no inherent quality by itself that could be a cause of benefit or harm for anyone. However, due to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam kissing it, this stone has become distinguished from other stones.
