Hadith 1606

Narrated Nafi`: Ibn `Umar. said, "I have never missed the touching of these two stones of Ka`ba (the Black Stone and the Yemenite Corner) both in the presence and the absence of crowds, since I saw the Prophet touching them." I asked Nafi`: "Did Ibn `Umar use to walk between the two Corners?" Nafi` replied, "He used to walk in order that it might be easy for him to touch it (the Corner Stone)."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The House of Allah (Baytullah) has four corners:
The corners of Rukn Yamani and the one with the Black Stone (Hajar Aswad) are called the Yamani corners.
The Iraqi Corner (Rukn Iraqi) and the Levantine Corner (Rukn Shami) are called the Shami (Levantine) corners.
(2)
Between the Rukn Yamani and the Black Stone (Hajar Aswad), one does not perform ramal (brisk walking with short steps), rather, one walks in the usual manner.
The relevance of this hadith to the chapter is that the questioner asked Hazrat Nafi‘ about walking between the Rukn Yamani and the Black Stone.
This means that ramal was not performed between these two, but was performed in the rest of the circuit.
Hazrat Nafi‘ explained that Hazrat Ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) would walk normally between the Rukn Yamani and the Black Stone so that the Black Stone could be kissed easily.
(3)
Touching the Rukn Yamani with the hand is called istilam.
It is not correct to kiss it after touching it, whereas kissing the Black Stone (Hajar Aswad) is Sunnah.
If that is not possible, then one should touch the Black Stone with the hand and kiss the hand.
If even that is not possible, then one should gesture towards it from a distance.
In the case of gesturing, it is not correct to kiss the hand.
