Hadith 1605

Narrated Zaid bin Aslam from his father who said: "`Umar bin Al-Khattab addressed the Corner (Black Stone) saying, 'By Allah! I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Prophet touching (and kissing) you, I would never have touched (and kissed) you.' Then he kissed it and said, 'There is no reason for us to do Ramal (in Tawaf) except that we wanted to show off before the pagans, and now Allah has destroyed them.' `Umar added, '(Nevertheless), the Prophet did that and we do not want to leave it (i.e. Ramal).'

Hadith Commentary:

Hazrat Umar (radi Allahu anhu) initially considered the reason and cause for performing raml and thought to abandon it. Then it occurred to him that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had performed this action. Perhaps there is another wisdom in it, and following you (the Prophet) is necessary. Therefore, he continued to uphold it. (Wahidi)

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From this hadith, it is understood that following the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) takes precedence over everything, whether or not its reason is apparent to our minds; we should put it into practice regardless. The biography of Umar al-Faruq (radi Allahu anhu) also teaches the same lesson. He was very strict in adhering to the Shariah and following the Sunnah. When he saw that the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) was being kissed and, apparently, there was no reason for it, he abandoned his own opinion and kissed the stone, thereby highlighting the importance of following the Sunnah. Regarding the practice of ramal (walking briskly with short steps during tawaf), he also said that although its original reason no longer exists, the demand of following the Sunnah is that it should still be practiced. In one narration, he said: "Now, what is the benefit of ramal and uncovering the shoulders?" Then he said: "It is possible that I have not been made aware of its wisdom." After that, he performed ramal. In this, the wisdom is sufficient that this act serves as a memorial, reminding us that Allah, the Exalted, had granted honor, strength, and glory to Islam and the people of Islam—that is, through this act, one is reminded of a blessing of Allah, the Exalted. (Fath al-Bari: 3/395)

(2)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed ramal during the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada’), even though at that time it was not intended to display strength to the polytheists. On this basis, whether the original reason exists or not, the status of ramal remains as it is. And Allah knows best.
