Hadith 1598

Narrated Salim that his father said: "Allah's Apostle, Usama bin Zaid, Bilal, and `Uthman bin abu Talha entered the Ka`ba and then closed its door. When they opened the door I was the first person to enter (the Ka`ba). I met Bilal and asked him, "Did Allah's Apostle offer a prayer inside (the Ka`ba)?" Bilal replied in the affirmative and said, "(The Prophet offered the prayer) in between the two right pillars."

Hadith Commentary:
The correspondence between the hadith and the chapter is evident.
The honorable Imam wishes to clarify that after entering the noble Ka'bah and closing the door, one may pray facing any direction one wishes.
Closing the door is necessary because if it remains open, then by facing that way, there would be no part of the Ka'bah in front of the worshipper, towards which it is obligatory to face.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) prayed between the two Yemeni pillars, which was a coincidental occurrence.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
This incident pertains to the Conquest of Makkah, as is explicitly mentioned in another narration.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jihad, Hadith: 2988)
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah’s purpose here is not to discuss whether the door of the Ka‘bah can be closed or not, because he has already addressed this issue previously.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Salah, Chapter: 81)
Rather, he intends to clarify that after entering the Sacred Ka‘bah, one may close the door and perform prayer facing any direction inside.
The wisdom in closing the door is so that one can pray in any part of the Ka‘bah, facing any direction, because if the door remains open, then for the person praying facing the door, there would be no part of the Ka‘bah in front of him, towards which it is necessary to face; there would only be open space ahead.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, coincidentally, prayed between the two Yemeni pillars.
(Fath al-Bari: 3/585)
And Allah knows best.

(2)
During the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there were six pillars inside the Ka‘bah.
There were two rows of three pillars each, as is mentioned in the hadith that when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam entered the Ka‘bah, he proceeded straight ahead, with one pillar of the Yemeni corner to his left, two pillars to his right, and three pillars behind him, and he performed two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer.
At that time, there were six pillars inside the Ka‘bah.
