Hadith 1540

Narrated Salim from his father: I heard that Allah's Apostle assumed Ihram with his hair matted together.

Hadith Commentary:
That is, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had set his hair in such a way with some sticky substance—such as gum, etc.—that during the state of ihram, the hair would not become disheveled. It was in this very state that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) entered into ihram.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The position of Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was that whoever has hair (locks) should shave (perform halq) during Hajj and should not keep them as if they are matted hair. Upon this, Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) referred to the practice of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), saying: I myself saw the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) with matted hair while he was in the state of ihram.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 5914) (2)
In one hadith it is stated:
Whoever has matted his hair at the time of ihram, it is necessary for him to shave his hair.
But in this narration, there is a narrator named Abdullah ibn Rafi', who is weak.
Imam al-Daraqutni has criticized him.
('Umdat al-Qari: 7/55)
The point is that shaving (halq) or shortening (taqsir) is not related to matting the hair; in any case, shaving is superior, and shortening—that is, cutting the hair short—is permissible.
And Allah knows best.

1747. Commentary: When the hair is long, managing it becomes an issue; therefore, in the state of ihram, if the hair is stuck together with some suitable substance to protect it from becoming excessively disheveled or from too much dust, then this is Sunnah, and this practice is called talbeed.

Question: Is it permissible to add to the well-known talbiyah recited during Hajj and Umrah?
Answer: Alhamdulillah: The talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was: «لبيك اللهم لبيك ، لبيك لا شريك لك لبيك ، إنّ الحمد والنعمة لك والملك ، لا شريك لك» “Here I am, O Allah! Here I am, here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise and blessings are Yours, and the dominion is Yours, You have no partner.” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not say anything more than these words. [بخاري : 5915، مسلم : 1184]
These words of the talbiyah are narrated from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam:
«لبيك إلـه الحق لبيك» “O True God, here I am.” [أحمد]
Al-Albani rahimahullah declared it authentic in Silsilah Sahihah (2146).
Some of the noble Companions have also been reported to have added to these words. Thus, Nafi’ says that Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma used to say in the talbiyah: «لبيك وسعديك ، والخير بيديك ، لبيك والرغباء إليك والعمل » “Here I am, here I am, present to seek felicity from You, all goodness is in Your hands, here I am, the desire for reward is only from You and the action is for You alone.” [مسلم : 1184]
In [مصنف ابن ابي شيبه 283/4], Miswar ibn Makhramah says: The talbiyah of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu was as follows: «لبيك اللهم لبيك ، لبيك لا شريك لك لبيك ، إن الحمد والنعمة لك والملك ، لا شريك لك ، لبيك مرغوبا أو مرهوبا ، لبيك ذا النّعماء والفضل الحسن»
“Here I am, O Allah! Here I am, here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise and blessings are Yours, and the dominion is Yours, You have no partner. I am present with hope in Your mercy and fear of Your punishment, here I am, for blessings, and for bounty and kindness.”
And it is established from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he did not object to the Companions adding words to the talbiyah, from which it is understood that these words are permissible.
Thus, Jabir ibn Abdullah radi Allahu anhu says: “The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited the talbiyah containing the statement of tawheed: «لبيك اللهم لبيك ، لبيك لا لا شريك لك لبيك ، إن الحمد والنعمة لك والملك ، لا شريك لك»
‘Here I am, O Allah! Here I am, here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise and blessings are Yours, and the dominion is Yours, You have no partner,’ and the people also recited the talbiyah in their own words, but the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not reject anyone’s words, while the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself continued to recite these same words.” [مسلم : 1218]
Thus, from the collective wording of these hadiths, it is understood that adhering to the talbiyah established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is superior, and if a person includes words narrated from the Companions or any other (legally permissible) words in the talbiyah, then there is no harm in it.
Accordingly, Imam Shafi’i rahimahullah, after mentioning the words of the talbiyah established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said:
“The talbiyah of the person entering the state of ihram should consist of these words, and he should not decrease or increase them. However, it is permissible to include the words narrated from Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, i.e.: «لبيك إله الحق», because the meaning of these words is also that of the talbiyah, as they also contain the meaning of talbiyah and being present. By saying these words, it is expressed that he has responded to the call of the True God by saying ‘labbayk’.
However, there should be no strictness regarding the talbiyah, as Ibn Umar and other Companions radi Allahu anhum have recited words containing the glorification of Allah as talbiyah, and have also included supplicatory words. But in my view, the preferred action is to suffice with the words narrated from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and not to add anything other than the words established from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. And when he stops the talbiyah, then he should glorify Allah and make supplications.” End, summarized (al-Umm: 2/169-170)
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen rahimahullah says:
Issue: “Can we add to the words of the talbiyah narrated by Jabir radi Allahu anhu from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?” In answer, we say: Yes, we can, because Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said in his talbiyah: « لبيك إله الحق » “O True God, here I am.” Here, “ilah al-haqq” is the described being annexed to the attribute, meaning: Here I am, You alone are the True God. And Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma used to add in the talbiyah:
«لبيك وسعديك ، والخير بيديك ، لبيك والرغباء إليك والعمل»
Therefore, if a person adds such words to the talbiyah, we hope there is no harm in it, but it is better to adhere to the words established from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.” End (al-Sharh al-Mumti‘: 7/111)
Shaykh Ibn Jibreen rahimahullah says:
“It is permissible to add to the prescribed words of the talbiyah, because the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to hear the various words of talbiyah from his Companions and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not object to any of them. Among the additional words from the Companions are:
« لبيك وسعديك ، والخير بيديك ، والشر ليس إليك ، نحن عبادك الوافدون إليك ، الراغبون فيما لديك»
Similarly: «لبيك والرغباء إليك والعمل»
Likewise, «لبيك إن العيش عيش الآخرة» or «لبيك حقا تعبدا ورقا»
All such words are permissible because in these words a person makes a promise and covenant with Allah to perform righteous deeds, and expresses his resolve to remain steadfast upon them. Likewise, in these words, there is praise and glorification of Allah befitting His majesty, because goodness comes from Him, goodness is obtained from Him, He is the Giver, and with Him there is no evil. Therefore, if a person recites such a talbiyah, then inshaAllah his worship will be accepted, and Allah will protect him for the rest of his life as well.” End (Sharh ‘Umdat al-Ahkam) And Allah knows best (Islam Question and Answer: 220989)
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has also declared it permissible to add to the talbiyah. [حجة النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم ص 54]
