Narrated Safwan bin Ya'la: Ya'la said to 'Umar, "Show me the Prophet (saws) when he is being inspired Divinely." While the Prophet (saws) was at Ji'rana (in the company of some of his Companions) a person came and asked, "O Allah's Messenger! What is your verdict regarding that person who assumes Ihram for 'Umra and is scented with perfume ?" The Prophet (saws) kept quiet for a while and he was Divinely inspired (then). 'Umar beckoned Ya'la. So he came, and the Allah's Messenger (saws) was shaded with sheet. Ya'la put his head in and saw that the face of Allah's Messenger was red and he was snoring. When the state of the Prophet (saws) was over, he (saws) asked, "Where is the person who asked about 'Umra?" Then that person was brought and the Prophet (saws) said, "Wash the perfume off your body thrice and take off the cloak and do the same in 'Umra as you do in Hajj."

Hadith Commentary:
From this hadith, those people have derived evidence who do not consider it permissible to apply perfume at the time of entering into ihram (the sacred state for pilgrimage).
Because the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered the effect of that perfume to be washed three times. This is also the opinion of Malik and Imam Muhammad.
And according to the majority of scholars, it is permissible to apply perfume at the time of entering into ihram, even if its effect remains after donning the ihram.
They say that the hadith of Ya’la is from the 8th year (Hijri), and in the 10th year, that is, during the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada’), Aisha (radi Allahu anha) applied perfume to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) at the time of entering into ihram, and this last action abrogates the previous one.
(Wahidi)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) states:
“And the majority responded that the incident of Ya’la took place at Ji’irrana, as is established in this hadith, and it was in the 8th year without any disagreement. And it is established from Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that she perfumed the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) with her own hand at the time of his ihram, as will come in the following narration, and that was during the Farewell Pilgrimage in the 10th year without any disagreement. Therefore, what is to be acted upon is the most recent of the commands, one after the other.”

The summary of this passage is the same as mentioned above.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Khaluq is a special type of fragrance in which saffron is included. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered it to be washed off his clothes because it is not appropriate for men to use saffron, as its prohibition has come in the hadith. Furthermore, the mentioned incident occurred in the eighth year of Hijrah. However, after this, there is evidence of using fragrance before entering the state of ihram during the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada‘). Thus, it is narrated from Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that she herself applied fragrance to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) before he entered ihram, and its traces could be seen even after he had entered ihram. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Hajj, Hadith: 1539)
(2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes that Hajjat al-Wada‘ took place in the tenth year of Hijrah, and the last action of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) abrogates his previous action. Therefore, the reason for washing off the fragrance in the aforementioned hadith was either due to the mixing of saffron in it, or it was a temporary command to wash it off, which was later abrogated by his own action. (Fath al-Bari: 3/498)
(3)
From this hadith, it is also understood that if someone wears stitched clothes in the state of ihram, they can be removed from the head, as is explicitly mentioned in the narration of Abu Dawud that he immediately removed his cloak from the head. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Manasik, Hadith: 1820) There is no need to tear the clothes while removing them, as is the opinion of some individuals. They say that if the clothes are removed from the head, the head will be covered, which is against the requirements of ihram, but the Shariah does not impose such strictness. (Fath al-Bari: 4/498) And Allah knows best.
