Hadith 1517

Narrated Thumama bin `Abdullah bin Anas: Anas performed the Hajj on a packsaddle and he was not a miser. Anas said, "Allah's Apostle performed Hajj on a packsaddle and the same Mount was carrying his baggage too."

Hadith Commentary: The meaning is that to be overly meticulous in Hajj and to seek out a comfortable mount is contrary to the Sunnah. Riding on a simple saddle is sufficient. There is no need for shaghduf and mahmil, or for fine litters, mattresses, and cushions. The more hardship there is in worship, the greater the reward. (Wahidi) These things have now become a matter of dreams and imagination in today’s journey of Hajj. Now, everywhere, motorcars and airplanes are running about. Even the blessed journey of Hajj is being undertaken by train, steamship, motorcar, and airplane. Then, at every step, maximum comfort is available. With these conveniences, Hajj is a confirmation of that hadith in which it is said that in the end times, the journey of Hajj will also become a means of recreation. However, even in these circumstances, those devoted to the Sunnah, if they wish, can undertake this blessed journey with simplicity, demonstrating God-consciousness and adherence to the Sunnah at every step. Permission is granted to walk on foot from Makkah Sharif. The government does not compel everyone to travel only by motor, but in this comfort-seeking world, all these things have come to be regarded as outdated. In any case, the reality is that the journey of Hajj is no less than jihad, provided that one attains the true Hajj. The word “zamilah” is used for such a camel that, during travel, was used separately for carrying luggage and food items. Here, the narrator’s purpose is to show that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) undertook this blessed journey with such simplicity that both riding and carrying luggage were accomplished with a single camel.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
This hadith also describes the simplicity of the journey of Hajj: Anas radi Allahu anhu, by Allah’s grace, was a man of means and was far removed from miserliness and stinginess. For his journey of Hajj, he did not arrange for a comfortable mount; rather, he placed a simple saddle on a simple mount, completed the Hajj upon it, and then referenced the Hajj journey of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, stating that he performed Hajj in the same manner. The she-camel upon which he rode was the same one upon which his travel provisions and supplies were loaded; no separate mount was arranged for this purpose.

(2)
The word “zamilah” is used for such a camel that is employed during travel for carrying luggage, supplies, and food and drink items. The intent of Anas radi Allahu anhu is that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam undertook this journey with such simplicity that he rode on a single camel and loaded his belongings upon it as well, without arranging a separate camel for this purpose. ‘Urwah ibn Zubayr states that at that time, when people set out for the journey of Hajj, they would load their belongings upon the same mount. ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu, however, arranged a camel specifically for his luggage.
