Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man who had drunk alcohol was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he gave him forty lashes with two sticks. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also gave the same punishment. When the era of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, he consulted the Companions. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The lightest punishment is (eighty) lashes, so he ordered that.
