Hadith 9389

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When Allah Almighty tests any Muslim servant with physical affliction, He says to the angel: This man used to do good deeds, so record them for him. If He grants him recovery, He will cleanse and purify him, and if He causes him to die, He will forgive him and have mercy on him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When a person falls ill, not only do they face various kinds of trials and illnesses that require patience, but they are also granted reward and recompense, the effects of sins are erased, and their ranks are elevated.

This too is a great favor from Allah Ta'ala, that when a servant, due to illness, is unable to maintain those voluntary acts of worship (nawafil) which he used to perform during times of health and well-being, or is unable to perform obligatory acts of worship (fara'id) in their original manner—for example, performing prayer (salah) while sitting—then Allah Ta'ala does not decrease the reward and recompense for his acts of worship. Rather, by looking at his intention and resolve, the sequence of his acts of worship continues to be recorded in his book of deeds, even though he is practically unable to perform them.
