Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: My Ummah will be destroyed by slander and plague. I said: O Messenger of Allah! We know about slander, but what is meant by plague? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In plague, a swelling appears on a person's neck like the swelling on a camel's neck. Whoever remains steadfast during this plague is like a martyr, and whoever flees from it is like one who flees from the battlefield.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these ahadith it is established that if one remains patiently in a place where plague has broken out, he will receive the reward of a martyr. If he flees from there, the sin is as great as that of one who flees from the battlefield, whereas fleeing from the battlefield is a major sin (kabirah). Therefore, fleeing from a plague-stricken area will also be considered a major sin (kabirah).
