Hadith 758

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Taliq (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We are in the desert and sometimes someone passes wind; (what should we do in such a situation)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah is not shy of stating the truth. When any of you does so, he should perform ablution, and do not approach women from behind.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Explanation of the last sentence of the hadith: It is understood that to use the wife from behind, that is, to have unnatural intercourse with her, is forbidden (haram). Husbands should use only that organ which Allah Ta'ala has designated as the place for the right of marriage. By "unnatural intercourse" is meant using the place of excretion; it does not mean that a husband cannot make his wife lie on her stomach. As Allah the Exalted says: {نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَّکُمْ فَأْتُوْا حَرْثَکُمْ اَنّٰی شِئْتُمْ} (Surah al-Baqarah: 223), meaning: "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish." The Jews believed that if intercourse was performed with the woman lying on her stomach, the child would be born cross-eyed. This belief of theirs is being refuted: whether intercourse is performed with the woman lying on her back, on her stomach, or on her side, it makes no difference to the offspring. What is necessary is that in every case, only the place of intercourse of the woman should be used.
