Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Among us, the word "khamr" mentioned in the ahadith is generally understood to mean wine, whereas from this hadith it is evident that every intoxicating substance is khamr, and every khamr is forbidden. Furthermore, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu said: "Al-khamr is that which covers (veils) the intellect." (Bukhari, Muslim) … Khamr is that which puts a veil over the intellect. In this regard, all things of the nature of tobacco use in the form of cigarettes, hookah, etc., as well as naswar, beedi, etc., are included in khamr. The use of wine and intoxicating substances is such a grave crime that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "The habitual drinker of khamr is like the worshipper of idols." (Ibn Majah: 3375) … The one who always drinks wine is like one who worships idols.
