Hadith 7538

Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Wine is made from wheat, wine is made from dates, wine is prepared from barley, wine is from dried grapes, and wine is prepared from honey.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Hanafi school holds the view that only wine made from grapes and dates is forbidden, but the blessed ahadith of this chapter support the view of the majority that every intoxicating substance is forbidden, whether it is wine made from grapes or dates, or from anything else. Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu, while delivering a sermon from the pulpit of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, declared: "Al-khamr is that which covers (veils) the intellect…" Khamr is that which puts a veil over the mind. (Bukhari, Muslim) In this regard, every person should firmly understand that the objective of the Shari‘ah is that anything which disrupts mental balance, or anything which veils the intellect—regardless of what it is made from, or whatever name is given to it—will be forbidden and prohibited.
