It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka‘b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Companion who participated in Khaybar stated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about a man who was with him that this man is among the people of Hell. But when the battle began, this man fought with great valor and received many wounds. Some Companions came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! The man about whom you said that he is among the people of Hell, by Allah, he fought an excellent battle and has received many wounds. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the same statement that this person is among the people of Hell. This could have caused some Companions to fall into doubt regarding their religion, but meanwhile, that man felt the pain of his wounds, reached his hand towards his quiver, took out an arrow from it, and killed himself. A Muslim ran to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah! Allah has made your statement true; that man has killed himself by committing suicide.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This incident was narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu. It has been said that this man was a hypocrite (munafiq) and participated in the battle for his own interests. His bravery astonished even the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum, but their astonishment dissipated upon witnessing the truthfulness of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
However, there is no evidence for the interpretation that he was a hypocrite in belief (i'tiqadi munafiq). It is not necessary for someone to be a hypocrite in belief in order to be among the people of Hellfire, because there will also be such inhabitants of Hell who, due to their faith, will eventually be taken out of Hell.

It should be kept in mind that the human soul (nafs) is not, in an absolute sense, the property of man; its true Owner is Allah, the Exalted. Man can only exercise as much control over it as Allah, the Exalted, has permitted him. Man has not even been given the right to use this existence to commit acts of disobedience to Allah, let alone to destroy this existence altogether.
