Abd Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We performed the Fajr prayer and came to Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and sat with him. He asked for water for ablution, so a vessel was brought in which there was water and a basin was brought. Then he poured water on his right hand and washed both hands three times. Then he rinsed his mouth three times and put water into his nose three times, one handful at a time. In another narration, it is mentioned: He rinsed his mouth three times with one handful and put water into his nose three times. Then he washed his face three times and washed his arms three times. Then he put his hand into the vessel and wiped his head once with both palms. Then he washed his feet three times each and then said: "This is the ablution of your Prophet, so learn it."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd bin Asim radi Allahu anhu was requested to demonstrate the ablution (wudu) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so he performed ablution. (The narrator described the method of rinsing the mouth and nose as follows:) "Then he inserted his hand, took it out, and with one handful rinsed his mouth and drew water into his nose, and he did this three times." … Then he put his hand in, took it out, and with one handful rinsed his mouth and drew water into his nose, and did so three times. At the end, he said: This is the ablution of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim) It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd radi Allahu anhu, who says: "I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam rinse his mouth and draw water into his nose with one handful, and he did this three times." … I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam rinse his mouth and draw water into his nose with one handful, and he did so three times.
From these ahadith, it is established that one should rinse the mouth and draw water into the nose with a single handful, as this is very easy to do. Taking one handful for both the mouth and nose is called "wasl" (joining), and taking separate handfuls for each is called "fasl" (separating). The ahadith regarding wasl are clear and explicit, but there is no narration that explicitly indicates fasl; if any allowance is found, it is weak. For example, a Companion says: "I saw him separate between rinsing the mouth and drawing water into the nose." (Abu Dawud: 139)
Firstly, this hadith is weak; in it, Layth ibn Abi Sulaym is weak and Talhah's father is unknown. Secondly, this hadith does not explicitly indicate two handfuls, because even with one handful, separation between rinsing the mouth and drawing water into the nose can be made, such as by using half the handful for the mouth and the other half for the nose. The same applies to the other narrations. However, it is necessary to mention that those friends who strive to establish fasl should also accept wasl, because this is established by authentic and explicit ahadith.
