It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When any one of you wakes up, he should not put his hands into the vessel before washing them three times, for he does not know where his hands spent the night." In one narration: before washing once or twice. In another narration: When any one of you wakes up from his sleep, he should not put his hands into the vessel until he has washed them three times, for he does not know where his hand spent the night.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The reason for this ruling that has been mentioned—that a person does not know where his hands have spent the night—shows that after every sleep, whether at night or during the day, one should wash one’s hands three times before putting them into a vessel. This is the beauty of Islamic law (shari‘ah) that it does not approve of anything harmful or doubtful for a person in any respect; rather, it also takes into consideration his natural disposition.
