Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Qateelah bint Abdul Uzza brought gifts of dried lizard, cheese, and ghee to her daughter, Sayyida Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), while she was a polytheist woman. So Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) refused to accept her gifts and to let her enter her house. When Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: {لَایَنْہَاکُمُاللّٰہُعَنِالَّذِیْنَلَمْیُقَاتِلُوْکُمْفِیالدِّیْنِوَلَمْیُخْرِجُوْکُمْمِّنْدِیَارِکُمْاَنْتَبَرُّوْھُمْوَتُقْسِطُوْآاِلَیْھِمْاِنَّاللّٰہَیُحِبُّالْمُقْسِطِیْنَ۔} … Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes—from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. (Surah Al-Mumtahanah: 8) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyida Asma to accept her mother’s gifts and to let her enter her house.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The narrations mentioned in this chapter are weak, but the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did accept gifts from non-Muslims on certain occasions. For example, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam accepted gifts from Kisra (the king of Persia), Caesar (the king of Rome), and various other kings. (Tirmidhi) The chief of Dumat al-Jandal presented a silk cloak as a gift to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. (Bukhari) A Jewish woman gave the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam a gift of poisoned goat, which he accepted. (Bukhari, Muslim) See the solution to this issue at the end of the next chapter.
