It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I swore by Lat and ‘Uzza. My companions said to me: You have spoken an evil word. So I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Our time of ignorance is still near, and I have sworn by Lat and ‘Uzza. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say three times, “There is no god but Allah, alone,” then spit three times to your left and seek refuge (in Allah), and do not swear such an oath again.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Some words would flow from the tongues of the Arabs unintentionally; even in the early days of Islam, such prohibited words would sometimes come from their tongues. The oaths by Lat and Uzza are also related to such words, or it refers to a person who, out of ignorance or forgetfulness, swears by Lat or Uzza. Otherwise, a person who knowingly and out of reverence swears by Lat or others like it is a disbeliever; there is no difference of opinion regarding his disbelief—he will be outside the fold of Islam. See the ahadith and their benefits in the chapter of hadith number (5292).
