Hadith 51

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Which deed is the most virtuous and which deed is the best?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "To have faith in Allah and His Messenger." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! After that, which one?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jihad in the way of Allah, which is the most excellent and noble deed." He said: "Then which one, O Messenger of Allah!?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A Hajj that is accepted (by Allah)."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of having faith in Allah Almighty is that His Essence and Attributes should be accepted exactly as they are, and there should be complete conviction in the implications of His Attributes. For example, providing sustenance (rizq) is an Attribute of Allah Almighty, and He has also commanded the use of lawful means and resources for sustenance. Now, if a person gathers sustenance through unlawful (haram) means, or after using lawful (halal) means refrains from giving charity (sadaqah) out of fear of scarcity, or does not close his shop to perform prayer (salah) at its appointed time, then this means that he is not fulfilling the requirement of Allah Almighty being the Provider (Razzaq), and he does not have complete trust in Allah’s Attribute of providing sustenance. Faith and conviction are not merely imaginary constructs, but have a deep connection with actions. The meaning of having faith in the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is to accept his truthfulness and to act upon his deeds, sayings, and approvals. An accepted Hajj (hajj mabrur) is one in which the pilgrim remains protected from every kind of disobedience to Allah Almighty; similarly, striving (jihad) in the path of Allah is a deed of great virtue.
