It is narrated from the wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that when the people of Makkah sent wealth and other things to ransom their captives, Sayyida Zainab, daughter of the Messenger (may Allah be pleased with her), sent wealth as ransom for her husband Abu al-As bin Rabi’. Among this was a necklace, which actually belonged to Sayyida Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). When Sayyida Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Abu al-As, Sayyida Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) had given it to her. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that necklace, he was overcome with emotion, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you consider it appropriate, then free my daughter’s captive just like that and return her necklace to her. The Companions said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! So they released Abu al-As and returned the necklace to Sayyida Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The eldest son of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was Sayyiduna Qasim radi Allahu anhu. After him, Sayyidah Zaynab radi Allahu anha was born. She was married to her maternal cousin, Sayyiduna Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi‘ radi Allahu anhu. Sayyiduna Abu al-As was indeed returned that necklace, but he was released on the condition that he would leave the way of Sayyidah Zaynab bint Rasul radi Allahu anha. Abu al-As did exactly that, and upon returning to Makkah, he left her way, and she migrated to Madinah. Later, Sayyiduna Abu al-As radi Allahu anhu also became Muslim, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned Sayyidah Zaynab radi Allahu anha to him with the first marriage itself. Then, in the year 8 AH, Sayyidah Zaynab passed away.
