Hadith 490

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a heap of filth belonging to a people and stood and urinated. Hammad bin Abi Sulayman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spread his legs apart.

Hadith Takhrij «حديث صحيح من حديث حذيفة ۔ أخرجه ابن ماجه: 306، (انظر مسند أحمد ترقيم الرسالة: 18150 ترقیم بيت الأفكار الدولية: 18331»
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Standing and urinating is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit, Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d, Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, and Sayyiduna Urwah bin Zubair. Similarly, when a Bedouin urinated standing in the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) mosque, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) later only spoke to him regarding the etiquette of the mosque; he did not prohibit standing (while urinating). This hadith has already been mentioned earlier. The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) generally relieved himself while sitting, but in light of the aforementioned ahadith, the permissibility of urinating while standing is also established, especially when there is an excuse. The hadith in which the reason for the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) standing is mentioned as pain in the inner part of the knee is weak; Imam Daraqutni and Imam Bayhaqi have declared it weak.

Two more narrations and their reality:
Sayyiduna Jabir says: ((Naha Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam an yabula ar-rajulu qa’iman …)) The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade a man from urinating while standing. (Ibn Majah: 309, this hadith is weak.) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him: ((Ya Umar! La tabul qa’iman.)) … O Umar! Do not urinate while standing. (Ibn Majah: 308, this hadith is also weak.)

There is no authentic narration in this chapter in which urinating while standing is prohibited; however, in some mawquf reports, it has been prohibited.
