Hadith 3745

(Second chain) Khubaib narrates from his paternal aunt Sayyida Anisah bint Khubaib (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) gives the call to prayer, continue eating and drinking, but when Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gives the call to prayer, then stop eating and drinking. Sayyida Anisah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When any woman still had her pre-dawn meal remaining, she would say to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): Wait a little, so that I may finish my pre-dawn meal.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of these ahadith is indeed that there was only a brief interval between these two calls to prayer (adhan), but the wording is such that the exact duration of this interval cannot be determined. However, the following hadith, in which the purpose of this adhan is mentioned, allows us to estimate the timing. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Let not the adhan of Bilal radi Allahu anhu prevent any of you from your pre-dawn meal (suhoor), for he gives the call to prayer at night so that the one who is standing (in prayer) may return (i.e., stop praying) and the one who is sleeping may be alerted (i.e., wake up).” (Bukhari, Muslim)

From this hadith, it is understood that this adhan served as a sign for those engaged in night prayer (qiyam) to stop, and for those sleeping to wake up and prepare for the Fajr prayer. It should be kept in mind that the callers to the two Fajr adhans were Sayyiduna Bilal and Sayyiduna Ibn Umm Maktum radi Allahu anhuma. From most of the ahadith in this chapter, it is understood that Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu would give the adhan for suhoor, but it is also established that Sayyiduna Ibn Umm Maktum radi Allahu anhu gave the adhan for suhoor and Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu gave the adhan for Fajr.
