عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَهَا: يَا بُنَيَّةُ! أَيُّ يَوْمٍ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قُلْتُ: يَوْمَ الْإِثْنَيْنِ، قَالَ: فِي كَمْ كَفَّنْتُمْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قُلْتُ: يَا أَبَتِ! كَفَّنَّاهُ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ أَثْوَابٍ بِيضٍ سُحُولِيَّةٍ جُدَدٍ يَمَانِيَّةٍ لَيْسَ فِيهَا قَمِيصٌ وَلَا عِمَامَةٌ أُدْرِجَ فِيهَا إِدْرَاجًا
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked her: Daughter! On which day did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pass away? I said: On Monday. He asked: In how many garments was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded? I said: Father! We shrouded him (peace and blessings be upon him) in three white new Yemeni Sahuli garments; there was neither a shirt nor a turban among them, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wrapped in those sheets.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this blessed hadith, it is understood that three sheets should be spread out, and the deceased should be placed upon them and then wrapped in them. This clarification is also present in the narrations of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, that among these three garments there was neither a shirt (qamees) nor a turban (‘imamah). The narrations in which a shirt is mentioned are either weak or, due to their opposition to this most authentic hadith, are considered irregular (shaadh). Is it necessary for the shroud (kafan) to consist of three garments? Its mention is coming in the next three chapters.
