Hadith 1414

Nafi’ reports that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: When a man has only one garment, he should use it as an izar (lower wrap) and perform prayer, because I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying this. And Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: When you have only one garment, do not wrap yourself in it in the manner that the Jews do. Nafi’ says: If I were to say that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) attributed this statement to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I hope I would not be considered a liar.

Hadith Takhrij «
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of the second narration in Musnad Ahmad (6356) is as follows: They said: "None of you should wrap himself in prayer with the wrapping of the Jews; rather, he should perform tawshih. Whoever has two garments should make one into an izar (lower garment) and the other into an upper garment, and whoever does not have two garments should perform prayer with only an izar." (What is meant by wrapping like the Jews is to wrap oneself in such a way with one garment that even the hands do not remain outside.)

Tawshih: Tawshih is that one edge of the garment is brought from under the left hand and placed over the right shoulder, and the other edge is brought from under the right and placed over the left shoulder, then both edges are joined and tied with a knot on the chest.
