Hadith 1305

A man from Banu Thaqif informed Sayyiduna Umar bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that on a rainy day, he heard the Mu’adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, after “Hayya ‘ala as-Salah, Hayya ‘ala al-Falah”: “Sallu fi rihalikum” (Pray in your homes).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … “Verily, the religion is ease” means: the religion is easy. One meaning of this hadith is explained here, that where the Shari‘ah has made congregational prayer in the mosque obligatory in normal circumstances, it has also allowed for concession in case of an excuse. In the season of rain or severe cold, changes or additions will be made in the call to prayer (adhan) in the following ways:

1. After “Hayya ‘ala as-salah, Hayya ‘ala al-falah,” to say “Sallu fi buyutikum” (Pray in your homes), as is established from the aforementioned hadith.
2. Instead of “Hayya ‘ala as-salah, Hayya ‘ala al-falah,” to say “Sallu fi buyutikum” (Pray in your homes). (Bukhari, Muslim)
3. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, during a journey on a cold or rainy night, instructed the mu’adhdhin to give the adhan and at the end to say: “Ala sallu fi ar-rihal” (Be aware! Pray in your dwellings). (Bukhari, Muslim; in some narrations, the mention of travel is not present)
4. After the adhan, saying “Wa man qa‘ada fala haraj” (If someone does not come, there is no harm) is also correct. (Musnad Ibn Abi Shaybah: 2/5/2, Bayhaqi: 1/398, Sahihah: 2605)

How many adhans are there for Jumu‘ah?
The Sunnah method is that, just like the regular prayers, only one adhan should be given for Jumu‘ah and one iqamah should be pronounced; this is the meaning of two calls (adhan and iqamah). In the era of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the era of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, the era of ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu, and the beginning of the era of ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu, this was the established practice for adhan and iqamah, and even now, preference should be given to this. Sayyiduna ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu, due to certain reasons, arranged for the words of the adhan to be called at the place of Zurā’—one mile away from Masjid Nabawi. To use the action of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu as evidence for giving the first adhan inside the mosque nowadays is questionable, because he used to have the adhan called at the place of Zurā’, not inside the mosque.
