Hadith 12946

(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The time is near when the river Euphrates will uncover a mountain of gold, and people will fight over it to such an extent that out of every ten men, nine will be killed and only one will remain."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Another narration related to this subject is as follows:
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Harith, who says: “I and Ubayy bin Ka‘b radi Allahu anhu were standing in the shade of the palace of Hassan. Ubayy said to me: ‘Do you not see that people’s necks are turned in different directions in pursuit of the world?’ I said: ‘Yes, indeed.’ He said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: ((Soon the Euphrates will uncover a mountain of gold. When people hear about it, they will go towards it. Those who are present near it will say: By Allah, if we leave the people to take from it, it will all be gone. So the people will fight each other, and out of every hundred, ninety-nine will be killed.)) And these are the exact words of the hadith of Abu from ‘Affan.’ I and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka‘b were standing in the shade of the palace of Sayyiduna Hassan radi Allahu anhuma. Sayyiduna Ubayy radi Allahu anhu said to me: ‘Do you not see that people’s necks are turned in different directions in pursuit of the world?’ I said: ‘Yes, indeed.’ He said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: Soon the Euphrates will uncover a mountain of gold. When people hear about it, they will go towards it. Those present near that mountain will say: By Allah, if we leave the people to their own devices, this mountain will be finished. So the people will fight each other, and out of every hundred, ninety-nine will be killed.’ (Sahih Muslim: 2895, and the wording is from Ahmad)

Benefits: … All of this will be due to the greed of amassing wealth.
Different numbers have been mentioned regarding those killed on this occasion. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: The narration that nine out of ten will be killed is shaadh (anomalous); the preserved narration is that ninety-nine out of every hundred will be killed, which Muslim has narrated. There is also a corroborating narration, which Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka‘b radi Allahu anhu narrated. And reconciliation is possible by considering that both hadiths refer to two different groups of people (in one group, ninety-nine out of a hundred will be killed, and in another, nine out of ten).
