It is narrated from Abdullah bin Imam Ahmad that my father, Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), said: For Imam Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him), nothing was more difficult than saying "Haddathana" (he narrated to us).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By saying "haddathana" is meant the narration of hadiths, that is, Imam Sufyan considered narrating hadiths to be the most difficult task. The reason for this was that perhaps something might be attributed to the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam which he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not actually say, or that some mistake might occur in his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam's hadith.

Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah was from the generation of the followers of the followers (taba‘ tabi‘i). His residence was Makkah al-Mukarramah, and he also passed away there. He heard hadith from Imam Zuhri, Imam ‘Amr ibn Dinar, Imam Sha‘bi, Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Dinar, and Imam Muhammad ibn Munkadir, and from him hadiths were narrated by Imam A‘mash, Imam Thawri, Imam Ibn Jurayj, Imam Shu‘bah, Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Mubarak, Imam Hammad ibn Zayd, Imam Shafi‘i, Imam Ahmad, and Imam Ibn al-Madini, among others. The people of knowledge are unanimous regarding his eminence, greatness, and high status. He was born in the year 107 Hijri and passed away in the year 198 Hijri.
