Hadith 11873

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (On the occasion of the conquest of Makkah) the people apparently accepted Islam, and Amr bin As accepted faith (with his heart).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In reality, through this statement, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam intended to remove from Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As radi Allahu anhu the enmity he harbored towards Islam and the people of Islam prior to his acceptance of Islam.

Imam al-Albani rahimahullah writes: In this hadith is the mention of the great virtue of Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As radi Allahu anhu, because the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam bore witness to his being a believer, the necessary consequence of which is Paradise, because he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((None shall enter Paradise except a believing soul.)) … Only a believer will enter Paradise.

Therefore, the opponents of the present age who criticize Sayyiduna Amr radi Allahu anhu on the basis that he differed with, and even fought against, Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, their claim is not correct, because this does not negate faith, just as the virtue mentioned regarding him does not establish his infallibility. It is better to say that this disagreement of Sayyiduna Amr radi Allahu anhu was due to his own ijtihad (independent juristic reasoning), not due to following desires. (Sahihah: 155)
