Hadith 11789

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at the house of Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). I placed water for you at night for ablution. Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed you, “O Messenger of Allah! This water was placed for you by Abdullah bin Abbas.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication for him: “O Allah! Grant him deep understanding in religion and the knowledge of the interpretation of the Qur’an.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the wording of one transmission of this hadith, the following detail is mentioned:

From Ibn Abbas: He poured ablution (wudu) water for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam at the house of his maternal aunt Maymunah. When the Prophet came out, he said: “Who placed the water for my ablution?” She said: “My nephew, O Messenger of Allah.” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “O Allah! Grant him understanding in the religion and teach him the interpretation (of the Qur’an).”

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu says that he filled (a vessel with) water for the ablution of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam while he was at the house of his (Ibn Abbas’s) maternal aunt Maymunah. When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came out (from the lavatory), he asked: “Who placed the water for ablution?” The aunt replied: “O Messenger of Allah! My nephew did.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “O Allah! Grant him deep understanding of the religion and teach him the interpretation (of the Qur’an).”

When Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu wished to serve the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in this way, he had three options before him: (1) He could bring the water into the lavatory, or (2) he could place it near the door close to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so that the Prophet could easily take it from there, or (3) he could do nothing at all.

Upon reflection, the second option appears to be the most appropriate, which Sayyiduna Abdullah radi Allahu anhu actually chose. This indicates his intelligence and sharpness. In accordance with this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made a most precious supplication for him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim radi Allahu anhu was the cousin of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He was born three years before the Hijrah. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplicated for him to have understanding of the Qur’an and jurisprudence (fiqh), and in accordance with this supplication, he became renowned for his knowledge, jurisprudence, understanding, and religion, and was called “the scholar of the ummah.” He is among those Companions who narrated many ahadith, and is one of the ‘Abadilah and the jurist-Companions. He passed away in Ta’if in the year 68 AH.
