Hadith 10195

Syedna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If a believer were to know of Allah Almighty’s punishment, no one would hope for Paradise, and if a disbeliever were to know of Allah Almighty’s mercy, no one would despair of Paradise. Allah Almighty has created a total of one hundred mercies; out of these, He has sent down one mercy among His creation, and because of it, they are merciful to one another, and ninety-nine mercies remain with Allah Almighty.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … A Muslim should, in his life, have hope in the mercy of Allah Ta‘ala, but at the same time, he should also fear His punishment. This is called living a life of fear and hope. Furthermore, his practical conduct should also be such that hope in the mercy of Allah Ta‘ala is apparent, while at the same time, the fear of His punishment continues to affect him.
