Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Which charity is best in terms of reward? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By your father! You will surely be informed of it. (The best charity is) that you give charity while you are healthy, desiring wealth, fearing poverty, and hoping for affluence. And do not delay charity to the extent that your soul reaches your throat and then you say: Give so much to so-and-so, and so much to so-and-so, while by then it has already become theirs."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared the phrase related to the chapter, “Amā wa abīk la-tunabba’unnah,” to be weak, while the rest of the narration is authentic. (Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad: 4772) ➋ The meaning of the hadith is that the best charity (sadaqah) is that which a person gives while he is in a state of health and strength, when he has hope of living and also fears poverty. Giving charity at the time of death, although to some extent permissible, is lesser in terms of reward and merit. However, if a person gives charity and alms during his lifetime and also gives charity at the time of death, and this is his final act after which death overtakes him, then this is a highly virtuous deed which will become a cause for entering Paradise.
