حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَا أُسَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ ، دَعَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي عُرْسِهِ ، وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ خَادِمَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ، وَهِيَ الْعَرُوسُ ، فَقَالَتْ : أَوْ قَالَ : أَتَدْرُونَ مَا أَنْقَعْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ أَنْقَعْتُ لَهُ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فِي تَوْرٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Usaid Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) invited the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to his wedding feast (walimah). On that day, his wife herself served them, while she was the bride. She said: Do you know what I had soaked for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? I had soaked some dates for him in a vessel at night.

Benefits and Issues:
Personally serving the guest is a source of reward, especially when the guest is a distinguished scholar of religion; in such a case, this service should certainly be performed personally. Furthermore, if there is no fear of any temptation (fitnah), then, while observing the Islamic etiquettes, the lady of the house may also serve, provided that one of her mahram (unmarriageable kin) is present. However, in the present era, gatherings and invitations at friends’ homes where there are mixed assemblies, no observance of hijab (veil), and casual, uninhibited conversation, are not correct.
