Hadith 547

It is narrated from ‘Iyad bin Khalifah (may Allah have mercy on him) that he heard Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying at the place of Siffin: Intelligence is in the heart, mercy is in the liver, gentleness is in the spleen, and breath is in the lungs.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Understanding and wisdom are connected to the heart, as is stated in the noble verse:
“Have they not traveled through the land so that they may have hearts with which they understand or ears with which they hear...”
Therefore, Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu said that intellect and understanding are in the heart, and if the heart itself is blind, then the rest of the body’s limbs do not function.
➋ The meaning of ‘aql (intellect) is to restrain, because human intellect also restrains a person from evil deeds and harmful matters. That is why it is called ‘aql. The purpose of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu saying this at the place of Siffin was that today the hearts of the Muslims have become corrupted, and thus the limbs that are connected to mercy and affection have also ceased to function, because the rectification of the entire body is connected to the heart.
